"Stump town U.S.A." Portland by caffeine_induced78

Portland, Oregon could have just as easily been Boston, Oregon. A coin flip between two early settlers, one from Boston and one from Portland, Maine decided the title of this town. Why Stump town you ask? Early settlers platted this town in a clearing in the woods. Tree stumps were left in the middle of the street and carriages had to navigate around the monsters. Until the Alaskan gold rush gave Seattle a boost this City of Roses was the pride of the Pacific Northwest, even coming some 10 years before Seattle into existence.
Today Portland is the largest city in Oregon and the obviuos starting point for many flying into the Beaver State. Portland is a young, vibrant city full of energy and art. Portlanders enjoy the dark bars full of mystery. People here are friendly and generally true to themselves so don't be afraid to strike up a conversation with the person sitting next to you.
- Pros:proabably one of the next trendy cities in America
- Cons:gentrification
- In a nutshell:the urban crown jewell of Oregon

The ..vern reminds me of the Tippy Canoe out on the Sandy River. No pretension, just cheap boozes and local rummies.
So I see I'm not the only one who thinks Portland is the Boston of the West coast. Nice insight.
The Vern.... that one cracked me up!... There is a bar in Madrid.. they wanted to be posh and called the The Shakespeare... only one problem.. they did not have enough space and they could only write The Shakespear
That's some interesting beginnings. Good Fish and Chips.. music to my ears. Red Star sure sounds goooood! good descriptions....lol
fish and chips, or blt is great but what is Bento!!!! Nice page and pics
Interesting tidbit on how Portland was named.
Now this page has it all. Food and beer. not much more you need in this rose town. after all i hear they've got all the glory in the world....
doesnt resemble my favourite band (oregon) at all but sounds like just the scene for a cold beer and a nights craic!
I have got to go the the Vern! How did you discover that place?
sounds like my sort of bar not lol at least beer was cold at verns great page
