The center of the old Southwest

by caffeine_induced78 - last update: Apr 24, 2004

Many Americans tend to think of the United States having been settled in the east first and then the Europeans gradually spreading west. Many people would be amazed to find that the town of Santa Fe, the old center of Spanish life in Northern New Mexico, was originally settled in 1610.
The old spanish settlements surrounded the area north of here and even extended into South central Colorado. This is one of my favorite cities that I have been to. It's a bit of old world charm with twisting, narrow streets where few would expect it to be. It's an arts haven, historic, and has wonderful foods blending the culinary habits of three cultures - Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo.

Pros:"a bit of that old world charm in the Southwest"
Cons:"confusing streets"
In A Nutshell:"it's older than most people think."

Staying in hostels is the most interesting way to go - if you can find one. They're scarce in the US.

Hostels! Must write a tip about the night shift guy in genoa who would not let me smoke on the terrace. Complete and utter bastard.
