"Colorado's oldest town." San Luis by caffeine_induced78

San Luis Travel Guide: 6 reviews and 10 photos

an oft overlooked gem

This is a wee little town, long isolatated that gave it's name to the San Luis Valley. The San Luis Valley stretches long and wide between the Sangre de Cristo mountains to the east and the San Juans to the west. The San Luis Valley is a dry area that is roughly the size of the state of Connecticut and holding less than one hundredth of the people. Although the Spanish had settled the Santa Fe and Taos area this area around the Uppper Rio Grande was long considered a "lost province," better left to the Native American tribes by the Spanish and later the Mexicans.

This is the oldest town in Colorado, the 1843 Sangre de Cristo land grant gave a large piece of land to prospective settlers. It wasn't until 1851 that a plaza was established in the town.

San Luis is a town that is still true to its hispanic roots. A large degree of isolatation helped keep this town from being influenced by Anglos. I highly recommened stopping here for a couple of hours. If the bars had been open at 3 pm - I might have made it a couple of days.
