Mekong Express - Cambodia

Mekong Express

Mekong Express - 1st Class Boat Service

We are lucky to be able to travel with this new Boat service that operates route from Siem Reap to Phnom Pehn and vice versa. It currently offered an unbelievable USD15 fare. With these price, the service are 1st class, with luggage check in, air condition, large comfortable seats, free flow of beverages, lunch, english movie on large screen TV, pillow, blanket, etc-etc.... If I'm not mistaken, it's operated by a japanese company. It feels more like travelling on a plane than on a boat even complete with a smilling and helpful 'boat-hostess' . You have to plan your trip though, as the boat will operate on alternate days....

Update Nov 2003: My aunt just came back from her Cambodia trip and according to her, the USD15 fare promotion is off now. The current fare is USD30 one way.

Camry with no numbers.... - Cambodia

Camry with no numbers....

Camry - no Number Plate

The camry you see around Poipet and Siem Reap are mostly without number plat. I was told that these cars are stolen from neighbouring country and used here illegally..... That's why, this car is driven by a driver on the right when in Cambodia, car is left driven and keep left!!!

Pumping petrol, cambodia's way - Cambodia

Pumping petrol, cambodia's way

Poipet to Siem Reap - 'Camry'

To get to Siem Reap from Poipet, we hire a 'Camry'. It cost THB1100 for a car. Notice that the car is without any car number plate. This is because it is actually illegal car that was most probably stolen in Thailand and smuggled into Cambodia.

A must read for anyone who is planning overland trip from Thailand is Gordon Sharpless's webpage at http://www.talesofasia.com/cambodia-overland-bkksr.htm

I 'study' it and also brought along a printed copy. It is so in details that I don't think my overland trip into Cambodia can go so smoothly without it.

Cambodia's highway - Cambodia
Cambodia's highway

What cambodia call highway might just be a straight dirt road as seen here in the picture. It is red in color and if it rains, will be covered with portholes of different size and depth! When it is not raining, these powderly dirt will fly whenever a car pass by. Driving behind another car, the view will be blinded by the 'red smoke' created.....
