Pulau Layang Travel Guide: 27 reviews and 77 photos

Pulau Layang-Layang, or Swallow Island is situated 300 km North of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. It is a remote oceanic atoll and is one of the World Class Diving Site to be found in Malaysia.

In this unique island, colourful coral walls plunges to the depth of 2000 metres and visibility average about 50 metres. Combination of these dramatic underwater topography and its remote location accounts for the abundant marine life and pristine condition.

Large shoals of pelagics, including massive numbers of barracuda, jacks, manta rays and hammerheads frequent these waters. The reefs & walls are also home to some of the finest & most spectacular displays of hard and soft corals in the world

Hammerhead Sharks and more.....

One of the main attraction to this remote island is the chance to see the unique Hammerhead Sharks. Not a day of dive that does not end with group of divers describing their close encounters with these sharks.

Hammerhead sharks here are the Scalloped Hammerheads. The hammerheads are the most distinguishable of the sharks with their wide, blunt heads in the shape of a doubleheader hammer. The Scalloped Hammerhead are light gray with white undersides. They typically grow to be 8 to 10 feet in length, and weigh 250 to 350 pounds. Their eyes are located on either side of their elongated heads, giving their brains two completely separate images.

For those who are more interested in colourful coral and reef fishes, Layang-Layang proved not to be a disappointment. Isolation from the mainland is an advantage in the sense, the coral are undisturbed in its pristine condition.
