...and your hotel room isn't quiiite ready yet, just dump your bags and head over to the nearest cemetery for a tranquil walk around the stones and statues and mausoleums. It worked for us back in Jan'96, so I guess my Paris intro was MONTMARTRE CEMETERY here. Just the first in a string of many, many, many happy encounters in this great city over the succeeding years...

Parks, Gardens, and Squares: an oasis to beat all oases!

Paris can become very warm and steamy in summertime. If you are out and about on such a day, find yourself in any of her parks for a cooling break by a fountain and some trees. My friend and I discovered the tranquil Place des Vosges during one of our Parisian strolls in June'02.

the arch is only the beginning

Before or after you climb to the *top* of this landmark, make sure you notice the wonderful detail underneath the arch. Here, too, you will find France's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from WW1.

The cathedral's interior is cavernous and stunning alright, but don't forget to really *see* the marvelous *exterior* as well...carvings and sculpture to rival any you will run across in the museums themselves!

When you need a break from the conventional, this would definitely be the place for you...the Paris Catecombs! They're off-the-beaten-path, location-wise, but are actually one of Paris' top attractions so you'll find them listed in any guidebook. A maze of corridors and chambers await you down here, make sure someone in your party has a flashlight or you may take a turn and never be seen again. After walking and wandering for what seems forEVer, voila! you come upon the rooms of floor-to-ceiling bones and skulls, all stacked very neatly. Been here for centuries 'cause the regular cemeteries just ran out of room, really. Not for the squeamish or claustrophobic, but for anyone else who has a macabre sense of adventure...

but don't!! this is the Marais, very cool, near the Place des Vosges...used to be a swamp centuries ago, but things have reeeeally improved since then...:)
