Brave the crowds, and the steep, narrow, winding stairway, but make sure you get yourself to the top of the towers at Notre Dame here at least once! You'll be rewarded with outstanding views of the city, not to mention close-up encounters with all your favorite gargoyles!

The marvelous Cathedrale Ste Chapelle is on the same Ile de la Cite where you find Notre Dame and the Conciergerie. The bottom level of Ste Chapelle is where the locals worshipped in medieval times, but it's the upstairs Royal chapel which will take your very breath away. Gold and stained glass come alive here, even on a cloudy day!

Street performers, particularly mimes and painted people, are generally waaaay annoying, but this guy was too cool for words. We ran into him on the hike up the Butte to Montmartre and the renowned (!) Place de Tertre. Every so often a slow smile would creep across his face and his eyes would pop open and the kids and adults alike laughed in mock horror. And we'd all stand around and wait for him to do it again.

...every time you see the Eiffel Tower. No matter how many times you've been to Paris, this should be your first reaction: I'M IN PARIS!!! If it's not, if you think it's a tourist trap or you have just become immune to its charms, it's time for you to go home, I'm afraid. ;-)

You don't need me to tell you to visit this Notre Dame cathedral in the heart of ancient Paris. It's always best in wintertime, I do say however. Wintry skies give it a gloomy facade that just *works.* The cooler temperatures make the hike up the 1,001 steps to the towers and that bell and those magnificent. charming gargoyle fellows, that much more tolerable, too! ;-)))
