A memory plaque about the revolution - Timisoara

A memory plaque about the revolution

The reformed church

It is not indicated at all from the city centre and there isn't very much left to see. But here it is that the 1989 revolution started that got Ceascescu and his wife out of office and broke the communist rule. The priest (or whatever his designation is in the reformed church) spoke out against Ceascescu and his politics. When the security forces tried to get him and his wife out, people in protest formed a barrier. But the priest and his wife were arrested anyway. This let to an uproar in Timisoara and got spread out over the country.

You can enter the building but it is almost all private appartments now. And the church was closed when i was there.

Address: Timotei Cipariu 1

Piata Victorii in the evening - Timisoara

Piata Victorii in the evening

In the evening

When it is nice weather people go for a stroll in the evening here. And since i was sitting myself on the terrace of a nice restaurant having dinner, i had no problems looking at everybody passing by. But once i had eaten i wanted to make a picture of this very fantastic square. I liked it during the day but in the evening it was miraculous

The flower clock - Timisoara

The flower clock

The flower clock

Found this clock while wandering through the city. It is in Parcul Civic i think. That is, if my memory and sense of direction serve me right. Apparently not so long ago, a businessman wanted the clock destroyed since he wanted that spot for a hotel. The people of Timisoara rebelled against the idea of the clock being destroyed. And i'm glad they did

The orthodox cathedral - Timisoara

The orthodox cathedral

The metropolitan cathedral

When you look at this cathedral from the distance, it looks like a fairytale building with its green and gold turrets and towers. And i quite liked the way it overlooked the piata. Especially in the evening when it is lit up by the lights around it, i found it very nice with piata Victoriei

It is not a very old building though. It was build early in the 20th century, though that doesn't make much of a difference with regard to how it looks

Piata Unirii - Timisoara

Piata Unirii

Piata Unirii

This is so far my most favorite square in Romania. If i would ever write a book and be lost for inspiration, this would be the place i would like to go to, sit and write. It is a fairly large square with all around it beautiful 18th and 19th century houses. And there are 2 churches. A catholic cathedral facing the square and a serbian church that 'butts in' between the grand houses. On one side you can see a little fountain and when you pay attention to it, you'll see a lot of people going there to fill up plastic bottles with the fountain's water. It is true mineral water and can be drunk safely.

Piata Victoriei - Timisoara

Piata Victoriei

Piata Victoriei

This square is rather modern although the buildings around it are late 19th century i think. Most buildings have shops in them. In the middle is a nice little park with benches so one can have a rest or just sit and read a book if one wants to.

Inside the cathedral - Timisoara

Inside the cathedral

Inside the metropolitan cathedral

When i walked in it was in the middle of a service. Though many people just walked in and out. This cathedral is the one where a lot of people were shot in the 1989 revolution. But i could hardly go and look for the bullet holes in the middle of a service. I decided to come back later. And forgot about it.

Directions: At the end of Piata Victoriei
