View of the Lange Haven (Long Port) - Schiedam

Schiedam was for me a satelite town of Rotterdam, not very interesting to go to. But then someone told me of the mills there and the fact that it was the jenever town of the Netherlands so i thought i should check it out....

One of the 5 mills of Schiedam

So one day when i had nothing to do, i went to schiedam. When i got of the train at Schiedam Central i was sourly disappointed. It didn't promise well. In fact, the view i saw was a discouraging one. But now i know that only the ones that persevere and want to check past that first sight see Schiedam as it really is..

Mixture of old and new

Schiedam is a strange mixture of old and new. Very beautiful old buildings like old warehouses are rapidly converting to appartments, very old streets with small houses are adjecent to a street with new appartment blocks.. Sometimes this works really well, sometimes it is very very ugly. But luckily in the really old centre it is mostly old that dominates the view. And it makes for pleasant surprises

At the moment the town is working very hard to become attractive again. The old neglected buildings are restorated and the general appearance is fast becoming more interesting.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Very nice old town centre
In a nutshell:A suprise gem and still of the beaten path

I must try jenever next time I visit Netherlands. Great tips and wow world traveller. I wish I could do that too. Drop in Malaysia if you the time... so near to Thailand. :-)
