Welcome to Bruges, the Venice of Belgium

by Ann75 - last update: Jan 25, 2005

One of the most beautiful cities in Belgium

View over the famous canals in Brugge
Bruges (Brugge) used to be very important in commerce and culture between the 12th and 15th century. After that it was somewhat forgotten...but circumstances turned the tide of its fortune. As a result,, Bruges is delightfully stuck visually and atmospherically back in medieval days. Many consider it the best preserved medieval city in Europe.

Bruges is small enough to manage all major sights on foot. It is so densely packed with enchanting plances that you'd never get bored wandering around. Bruges' architecture may even be more outstanding than its art, which features Flemish primitive painters like: Van der Weyden, Van Eyck, Memling,...

The most popular sights in Bruges include: The famous canals with it's canal cruistes, the Minnewater, and Begijnhof, the Belfry, the town square with its beautiful buildings and so much more.

The beautiful canals in Bruges

The beautiful canals are very popular in Bruges and beautiful too. That's why lots of people refer to it as the Venice of Belgium or Venice of the North. You can take canal cruises to explore the city in a different way. There are several central departure places.

Most tours offer multilingual commentary and the open boats offer wonderful photographic opportunities. Make sure to have umbrella in case of some drizzle

Many buildings, museums and more

Bruges is full of beautiful buildings, lovely churches, squares and museums. You can fill your day up with many different things, a morning at a museum, an afternoon stroll through the city on its cobbled stone streets, a dinner at a lovely restaurant, a walk through the park and so much more.

Bruges Lace is also very famous because the lace is still hand made over here. You can find many little shops that sell the most beautiful lace pieces from little postcard-size pieces to huge tablecloths.

Thanks for your "late" BDay wish ;-) Should go back to Belgium to solve my perpetual dilemma if Belgium chocolate is better than the Swiss one!
