The centre of Genk is a place for shopping, wondering around and enjoying many of the patio's (especially in the summer). There are 3 Shopping Centre's: Shopping 1 Centre, Shopping 2 Centre and Shopping 3 Centre. You'll find many stores from clothing stores, to book stores and grocery stores.

The centre of Genk is fun in the summer because there are many events in the summer to enjoy like some festivals, celebrations and much more. The streets are lovely for a stroll and relax on one of the many patio's of a cafe.

The Molenvijver Park got the name thanks to the lake which is located by the old mill. There are many lovely trees, plants and flowers to see. It's a fairly big city park with a lovely small lake, walkways, grasfields and it also includes the lovely sundail park with 12 different models.

This park is beautiful in the spring and summer. Many wedding pictures are taken in this park. It's a great place to walk, to relax and to enjoy nature.

For most of us the sundails are mysterious things. Mainly only the people that know something about it can read the time of these sundails...and then usually only when the sun is actually shining. These sundails were used ages ago to read the time before there were any clocks.

At the Molenvijvers Park there is display of 12 different kinds of sundails. Anyone can go and admire them and try to read the time if they know something about it. It's very interested to see...and it's free!

In the recreation area of Kattevennen located in Genk has much to offer. You can visit the Europlanitarium where you can learn about astronomy, meteorology and space travel. There are also different shows where you can see the universe displayed on the ceiling of a dome inside of the building.

There are also 2 walking routes: the nature route and the planet route. These are self guided walks where you can get close to nature. You'll walk through a lovely forest where you'll find boards where can read about the trees, shrubs, flowers and invironment on the nature walk. The planet walk is also self guided and you'll find the 9 planets. You can find info about each planet on the info boards along the way.

Then there is also "Georama" a geological garden which explains the birth of this earth through the different rocks and sediments. You will also find minigolf area, a sport complex, playgrounds and a ski area (outdoor on green plastic carpets).

If you like to try some skiing without snow, then you should definitely visit Kattevenia. It has an outdoor ski area made out of green carpets. The carpets are kept wet by small sprinklers underneath. It's much harder to ski on these carpets than on real snow.

Don't fall on your behind, as those carpets are not butt friendly! ;-) But it's kind of fun to spend an afternoon skiing on these green carpets. I am not sure what it cost nowadays, I imagine it won't be that much.

The Europlanetarium is located in the recreational area of Kattevennen. It is a great place to explore everything about astronomy. You'll learn about the different planets, the stars and so much more.

There is some sort of a movie theatre with a huge 360 degree ceiling dome where you can watch films about astronony, the stars, the planets and so much more. They have severals shows about astronomy here as also some lasershows.

The Maten in Genk is a unique protected nature reserve with several kinds of vegetation, dry sanddunes, heather, swamp areas and more.

This area is very important for birds. It's place where birds can lay their eggs, or just stop by to get some energy for their next trip.

This nature reserve has a few wonderful walking trails that you can follow to see this beautiful place and is also excellent for bird watching.

Bokrijk is a some sort of big park where you can find the Open Air Museum, a big playground and much more. The Open Air Museum displays Flanders of some 150 years ago.

In the Open Air Museum you can experience how our ancestors lived, worked and entertained themselves. There are over a 100 historical buildings just the way they were a century ago. The museum's staff is also dressed up like they were in those days and they are happy to show you some crafts and other things from that time.

The residents, or caretakers, will be pleased to take you around 'their' home, and will give you information about everything you want to know. Complete farms have been equipped with stables, stalls, barns, bakeries, and so on. In addition, the interiors of the buildings, the furniture, the household goods, the farming equipment etc., are all authentically present.
