"Medininkai - castle ruins and life of minorities" Medininkai by Raimix

Medininkai Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 11 photos

Medininkai is always associated with famous Medininkai castle and its ruins. Village name looks very similar to "medis", "medinis", that in Lithuanian means "wood", "wooden". I haven't found how village name was formed, but actually from first moments of this village history was appearance of wooden castle, later made from stones.
As it seems, Medininkai is also famous from quite unexpected thing - films shooting. When I was there, English speaking people were filming something about Empire of Rome.

Medininkai is just near the border of Belarus, so I was thinking that there will be harder to speak Lithuanian and actually it was. It looked like I am not in Lithuania, but somewhere in Slavic country, as from local people I have heard Polish, Russian, Byelorussian languages and only some understood Lithuanian. So, I felt like white swan between dark ducks :)

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Big castle ruins, highest "hills" in Lithuania
  • Cons:Very off the beaten place, no tourism traces at all
  • In a nutshell:Medininkai is nice place for people, who want to learn Lithuanian history deeper
