After visiting Western Poland at end of June 2008, at first days of July I decided to head to Siauliai city for daytrip from Vilnius. Actually I got to know that daytrip from Vilnius is possible, just you need to get up earlier (at about 5AM) and naturally to go to bed bit later :)
Siauliai ir forth largest city of Lithuania, population is about 147 thousands. It could be called the major city of Northern Lithuania – mostly for trade and industry. Actually in regards of tourism, people use Siauliai more for reaching Hill of Crosses, but not city itself. Anyway, city has what to show.
City was firstly mentioned in 1236, as not so far from city the famous “Saules” (Sun’s) battle took place. Here Livonian Order warriors were defeated and intervention to Lithuanian land was stopped for some time. |
| | City is located at quite significant roads junction connecting Tallinn (Estonia) and Warsaw (Poland), Klaipeda and east road to Russia. Net of roads and building of railway (19th century) was these main factors that gave to Siauliai more development possibilities.
During World War II city lost about 85 percept of its buildings, so it is hard to find older structures here, city more a home of soviet architecture, but of course, has some remains from earlier past. |

yumyum Wed Jul 1, 2009 09:42 UTC I liked Siauliai a lot and to the Hill of Crosses I have been on 3 different occasions over the years. Would like to catch a train at 6 am ;) | HORSCHECK Sun Jun 28, 2009 19:48 UTC Raimis, fantastic new page with excellent information. I especially like the story about the two pelicans as well as about the Kastytis cigarettes. Your page brings back many memories of our two days in Siauliai. Well done. :-) | b1bob Sun Jun 28, 2009 17:20 UTC The phoenix symbolises it's rise from the ashes of World War II. If it isn't already, Siauliai should be a sister city to Phoenix, Arizona, USA. | Kuznetsov_Sergey Sat Jun 27, 2009 14:30 UTC Great place to visit in Lithuania! Dreamed to see it in Soviet times but never been unfortunately. Thanks Raimundas for showing it for us here. |
