When second time visiting Riga, I decided to see Sigulda and Jurmala as well and actually it was in one day! ;)

Sigulda is about 50 kilometres from Riga, easy reachable by bus, train, car. As I wrote, it is a mix of castles (three of them), forests and rivers. The biggest river, crossing Sigulda and making nice landscape is Gauja. It is both the second longest river in Latvia. That’s why this area is called Gauja National park and saved by government.

Here is very nice nature - mostly river Gauja, forests, swamps, valleys, and meadows. I believe if traveller coming here is not just for sightseeing, he\she can spend more than one day here walking unknown paths and watching birds, trees, rivers flows and so on.

In Sigulda\Turaida area it is tourism path made to see all main sights – all three castles, funicular, caves of Gutmanis and Small cave. If visiting Sigulda just for one day, better to walk that tourism path.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Historical silent place and good relaxing in nature.
  • Cons:Need to prepare better this place for tourists.
  • In a nutshell:If you in Riga for more than few days, visit Sigulda!

Lovely little page! I like the castle best ! I must say that I'm not terribly impressed by the caves and I hope you get to see some real big ones one day! Greetings from wintery Zurich...
