"Prague - the princess of Europe" Prague by Raimix

Prague Travel Guide: 11,434 reviews and 23,108 photos

Visiting Prague and places around (Karlstejn, Kutna Hora, Plzen) was one of my travel plans for summer of 2009. Actually I had other plan too – through Poland (visiting Warsaw) move to Ukraine (Lvov and places around), but this time Czech Republic got priority. My stay in Prague lasted a week, doing daytrips to three other sites. As usually, I used the help of Hospitality club and CouchSurfing members. Thanks to them I have got to know more than it could be possible on trip with travel agency or staying at hostels/hotels.

Prague is one of the most popular travel destinations in Europe; city was one of the most important in medieval times, named as “City of hundred spires” or “the crown of the World”. As it seems, city left with its beauty till these days.

Prague was firstly mentioned in 965 in the narration of Ibrahim Ibn Jakub. The place already had a castle from second half of 9th century. From 1085 it is Bohemian king’s Vratislav residence, so it means a capital city. At the rule of Czech known king Charles IV (1346 – 1378) city became not only capital of Bohemia, but also of Holy Roman Empire. That time such important buildings as Charles Bridge and St. Vitus Cathedral was constructed. Anyway, later history shows that city lost its big importance, starting from 16 - 17th centuries till 1918.

1526 was the year when Habsburg’s dynasty began to rule forming upcoming influence of Austrians. After the Battle of White Mountain (1620) Bohemia became a part of Austrian monarchy. The fall of Holy Roman Empire (1806) caused Prague’s territory dependence on Austrian Empire and later on Austrian - Hungarian empire. Only in 1918 after collapse of Austrian – Hungarian common state (cause of end of Wold War I), state of Czechoslovakia appeared with a capital of Prague. The states were softly separated for national purposes into Czech Republic and Slovakia (1993). Prague became a capital of Czech Republic and one of the most important cities in Central Europe.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros: Lot of interesting, beautiful sights, affordable prices.
  • Cons: Too touristy in some parts.
  • In a nutshell: One of the best sites Europe can offer.

Me again, coming back to look at the rest of your Prague tips. It's interesting that according to statistics the Czechs (and the Estonians) are the least religious people in Europe, so the churches in Prague are mostly empty or used for tourist concerts.

Raimis, very impressive page! I didn't know that there were so many synagogues. Also Lennon wall is interesting. Have been to Prague twice and I really love the park on Petrin hill and down towards the castle.

Beautiful page on very beautiful city I have to revisit. I was in Prague in 1998, so I couldn't see Victims of communism memorial and I didn't see John Lennon wall as well.

Raimis, simply fabulous page. I especially like your local custom observations. Your page reminds me on my time in Prague. Unfortunately I missed the victims of communism memorial and the Lennon wall, but like you I also went to Karlstejn and Kutna Hora.
