Things To Do: Capital of Lithuania - Vilnius

This is a city where I was born. The great memories are associated to this place.
Population is about 600000, so this place is not very big place by the sight of other capitals of Europe.
Firstly, meet Vilnius old town with lot of church' towers, narow streets, corners of nature. The part of Zverynas (funny, but this place means menagerie) contains a architecture of wood carving buildings, Antakalnis really nice place to have a look to Sts Peter and Paul's church.
So, Vilnius is a place you must see firstly by coming to Lithuania.
If you interested in more information, have a look to my Vilnius VT page.

Things To Do: Trakai - former famous capital of Lithuania

Trakai is about 25 kilometers from Vilnius, so one time I prepared my bike for nice trip to Trakai. A little resort with castle lead to fell me like in medieval little village with filled of Lithuanian minority group of Karaits culture. Castle, of course, is a main thing to introduce Trakai. Builded in the end of XIV century this fortress makes me glad about rich history of Lithuania. Don't miss a museum inside it. Specific museum of Karaits, some beautiful churches, strange wooden architecture houses can interest you too. Everytime the I meet Trakai I love to rent a boat and go boating in the lake Galve, admire a great view of island's castle. There is a one legendary story about Galve lake (and it's a real fact I think) what lake freeze only when somebody drown. Because it called "Galves" - translation to english means "heads".

Dukstai recently started to be famous for its Oak tree park - it is made just a few years ago and this park is fully prepared for walking (it is fine for disabled people as well). Park theme is a pagan times, when oak tree forests were like a house for old pagan Gods and people were coming here to greet them and give sacrifices.

Things To Do: Kernave - first capital of Lithuania

in 2004 Kernave was inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage list. This small village, but the first capital of Lithuania in the past, is worth of it. To sum up, this nice place takes to first steps of Lithuanian history and give a view of Lithuanian village. It is such feeling in Kernave that old castles and the first capital of Lithuania gone somewhere and now it is only a small village with some things to see and these things show us the remains of past. It is like Lithuanian "Troy".

Things To Do: Kaunas - a son of Nemunas and Neris confluence
|
Tip Rating: |

|
|
|
When I first time came to Kaunas, my eyes noticed a long long street called Laisves Aleja (Avenue of Freedom). This is a street only for pedestrians, it is a street of a lot of shops, caffes and other atractions. But the main thing why a big number of people go throught this street is a finishing destination - old town. It is worth to see all museums, churches, a confluence of the biggest rivers of Lithuania Nemunas and Neris. A lot of beautiful places I found walking throught narrow Kaunas streets.
It doesn't matter what I was in Kaunas a few times - I would come back to Kaunas more times.
My Kaunas VT page is there.

Things To Do: Orvydu sodyba - park of national symbols

When I was finishing walking in Orvydu farmsted. I said "bye bye real Lithuanian park with a lot of signs of nationality". Sodyba means farmstead, but it's not farmstead - it is a park, which was created by proffesional sculptor Orvydas. This sculptor not only filled up his park with a sculptures, but with wooden carvings, a little houses and more. A lot of stones was transported there from neighbouring regions and put up there with destination to form a very beautiful landscape, which is a reminder of old Lithuanian art, culture.

In photo I am near statue of St Maria in Tiskeviciai park in Palanga.

Nida is the main city of Curonian Split (inscribed to UNESCO because of its nature). It is famous because of nice wooden architecture, the city between two waters - Curonian sea and Baltic sea. The zone between them is Curonian Split. Let's say, the zone between Nida town (near Curonian sea) and Baltic sea is about 2-3 kilometres only.

Things To Do: Druskininkai - resort between pine tree forests

The name of this city was firstly mentioned in 1596. In 1837 Druskininkai got the name of the spa due to mineral waters.
It is one of the best resorts in Lithuania. Maybe there are not so much sightseeing, but beautiful nature and good sanatories. City centre is between Nemunas river and Druskonis lake. It is full of sculptures, flowers, parks, lakes. If it looks that Druskininkai is too boring, you could bike to some nice places around (biking routes are made). Recently Aqua park started to work in Druskininkai. It is first Aqua park in Lithuania and is said one of the best in Europe.

Things To Do: Grutas - park of soviet sculptures
|
Tip Rating: |
 |
|
|
|
|
|
Park is made in 2001 after some protests against it. Grutas park official name is "Museum of Soviet sculptures", but there are not only sculptures, that were put in Lithuania territory before Soviet Union crash, but also small museum of Soviet stuff, Soviet style library and picture gallery, even small ZOO, playground for children, Soviet bar.
This park is quite interesting for travelers from Western Europe, but could be nice for locals as well, as it shows what happened not so long ago.
