City was first time mentioned after Livonian Order built Dinaburg castle in 1275. The name of the city means “castle near Daugava River”, and the name of river “Daug – ava” translating from Sanskrit (old Indian language) mean “much water”, “full of water”.
From 1561 Daugavpils and region around was taken by Kingdom of Poland and Lithuanian Grand Duchy and belonged till second half of 18th century. Later it became a peace of Tsarist Russia. Actually from that time rusification was started here. Statistics show that nowadays city has population of about 120 thousand and is second biggest city of Latvia. Latvians here is minority (14 percents), it is inhabited mostly by Russians (about 59 percents), so it is no wonder to hear Russian language around and to see greeting cards with Cyrillic texts in shops.
City started to grow faster after World War II because of urbanization and migration. Daugavpils is mostly known because of its Fortress from 19th century, but city and region itself isn’t so touristy. |
