"Veliuona - historical small town on Nemunas bank" Veliuona by Raimix
Veliuona Travel Guide: 9 reviews and 18 photos
Veliuona, I should tell, is one of the most interesting small towns in Lithuania. Nowadays it is not so famous and important as it was in medieval Lithuania, written among eight main towns. Place was one of the strongest defensive points against Crusaders. It was first mentioned in end of 13th century. Today it has around 900 inhabitants; here is a renaissance church, a mound and wooden palace.
Veliuona was visited in July of 2011, when taking a way from Vilnius to Sventoji near Baltic sea. Instead of using Kaunas – Klaipeda autobahn, I decided to turn to a road along Nemunas river, it was a really good decision, making driving longer, but not so monotonic.
- Pros:Cozy, historical, nice landscapes.
- Cons:Too small just to visit it alone.
- In a nutshell:Small historical town near Nemunas river.

A very pretty area. I drove through Vytenai and visited Panemunes castle with my mother in 2008 when we came from Nida to Kaunas via the "back" way. Thanks to you, I now know again where I've been :-)
Raimis, lovely little page about this Lithuanian gem. It looks like you were quite lucky with the weather during your visit. I especially like the church and the Grand Duke Vytautas monument.
