Buyukada is the largest island nearby Istanbul, located in Marmara sea. The name of island actually has meaning of simply “big island”. There are many of them around, but four of them are these where slow ferry stops (Kinaliada, Burgazada, Heybeliada and finally Buyukada). I have decided to make a relaxing daytrip from Istanbul to the most interesting Buyukada island.

The group of islands was named as Princes’ islands due to the fact that from Byzantine times place was used to intern famous people, including also monarchs, their family members. They were living mostly in monasteries, convents.

Buyukada was always a place for different religions and cultures, so here on the plain place and also to higher mountains of island you could find Greek monastery, Armenian Church, few mosques. Also place is famous for 100 years or a bit older wooden mansions to explore. Higher locations of island are nice to enjoy wide Istanbul panoramas.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Nature, difference in architecture.
  • Cons:The schedule of ferries could be more frequent.
  • In a nutshell:Nice daytrip out of Istanbul.

I had several holidays on Kınılıada, and enjoyed an island hop to Büyükada. Good pages.
