Alexandria is a strange city. So much of it's ancient past has been erased, even its recent past lies dormant as walking the streets you can imagine yourself to be in Nice, Marseilles or Algiers. The city that most comes to mind is pre-war Beirut.
In some ways this is quite sad as many of those Alexandrians left between 1956 to 1960 after the Suez Canal fiasco.
During the next forty years Alexandria went downhill, but is now back and the new Library has given back some of the magic the city lost. |
|  | The Streetcars of Alexandria Sitting at Delices, having a mango juice and Om Ali (which can give you diabetes if you are not careful) overlooking the sea and watching the streetcars go by, it is hard to remember where you are. Alex is a great break from the often urban nightmare of Cairo. |
