The major problem about this road from a driver's point of view is the fact that because it is so spectacular, you are constantly running the risk of taking your eyes off the road in order to gape at the latest roadside wonder...

On a twisting and steep road such as this, a moment's lack of concentration can easily be fatal!

To compound the danger of distraction, is this part of the West Coast's famously thick cold fogs that roll in off the Pacific Ocean with amazing suddenness. One minute we were driving along in clear skies and the next minute you could barely see 50 metres in front of you!

Then there's the fact that if this is high season, you will have to be dealing with a very busy road and the possibility that the oncoming traffic might be busy rubbernecking at the views themselves...

Remember, you are supposed to be enjoying the views so take your time and stop frequently, as there are plenty of excuses, at the many places along the way to prevent getting tired...

Also, I estimate that it takes roughly five hours to complete the Big Sur route, so take that into account. If you do it faster, chances are you're either risking an accident or you're not properly enjoying this stunningly beautiful and wild enclave of the California coastline...
