Hallgrimskirkja from Perlan
"It's 1372 kms to circumnavigate Iceland, we've got a full tank of gas, 6 days to do it in, it's late afternoon and we're wearing sunglasses."

After two days in Reykjavik we picked up a monster 4WD with a clear mission in mind - going all the way around Iceland, during as it transpires one of the worst cold snaps in the country for years!

2088kms later and what an adventure!

Iceland: That beautiful far off island of fire and ice - a place I have always wanted to visit and what an experience it was!

Quick Tips and Suggestions

Iceland is...

Reykjavik.

Vikings.

Sagas.

The Blue Lagoon.

The World's first parliament.

The original geyser.

Waterfalls.

Glaciers.

Volcanoes.

Puffins.

Experience these, and you will have gone some way to experiencing the essence of this fascinating country...

Getting Around

If you're just basing yourself in Reykjavik, then the comprehensive bus system is all you'll need!

During Summer (June - August), buses operate throughout Iceland - whereas in Winter these services are severely curtailed or completely non-existent!

The other excellent way to get around is by plane, with many scheduled flights throughout Iceland including an Arctic Circle trip to Grimsey.

There are also a number of ferry trips mostly through Summer to places like Heimay, Flatey, Papay and Grimsey...

Personally In my mind you cannot beat your own transport, especially a nice big 4WD in blizzards and icy roads!
Gullfoss - Iceland's most famous waterfall!

Wow...amazing pictures! We are going in July, and I am so excited! Did I read that correctly? You went over 2000 km in 6 days??? We shouldn't have any problems then with 10 days. :-)

Excellent page on your off-season trip. We'll be coming here in June -- still off-season, but I hope no blizzards and a BIT warmer than -12C! 8) Cheers, Mark

Wonderful page on Iceland. I spent two weeks there in may and had absolutely great time there. In Finland it is a custom to leave babies out in their prams too!

Shame you didn't use one of the nature shots for your opening, they look so much better blown up. Cheers (I haven't got the footy results yet)
