I got to hold the Olympic Torch!!!

How many times does it happen...?

There you are minding your own business and suddenly you stumble on some kind of momentous event...

It was just a case of right place at the right time! :-)

Funnily enough our first day trip to Rhodes Town was scuppered by a flat tyre on our car and the discovery that it was missing the jack to replace the flat with. It was a couple of hours before Holiday Autos were able to come out and replace the tyre and jack and by then it was too late to drive up to Rhodes Town and we just swapped our itineraries with the next day...

Funnier still we said that it might have happened for a reason - and lo and behold, we ended up in town on THE DAY that the Olympic Torch was touring Rhodes!

So we checked the route and found a suitable Taverna overlooking the main square of Plateia Ippokratous in the Old Town and waited...

And waited...

And waited...

And waited...

Until the next torch bearer in the relay arrived. While we waited for the spectacle of the relaying and passing of the torch, we saw people lining up for photos and I thought "why not?"

It was such a rush being caught up in the fantastic Olympic fever, especially only just over a week after Greece had won the Football European Cup - it truly was a proud time for Greeks!

I still can't believe I actually held a torch that carried the flame towards the 2004 Olympics! :-)
