Highlights

This attractive market town is the south eastern gateway to the Brecon Beacons National park, with an information centre for the National Park. It is also just down the hill from the Blaeavon UNESCO World Heritage site.

It is set attractively at the confluence of two river valleys surrounded by rich green hills overlooking it, including the popular Blorenge and Sugar Loaf Hills.

Abergavenny makes a great base for exploring the surrounding areas as well as being famous for good food and wine with many local producers nearby even including a vineyard. The main event in the calendar of the town is the Annual Food Festival which is in its 7th year and going from strength to strength with over 28,000 visitors last year!

Quick Tips and Suggestions

The are several castles in the immediate environs of Abergavenny, most notably Raglan which is about 9 miles away.

The castle in the town itself is just a shell, but there is a well recommended local museum in the grounds.

There are regular bi-weekly farmer's markets and every September the is the annual Abergavenny Food Festival weekend, which has become the biggest festival of its kind in Wales and was voted the best event in Wales in 2003...

Getting Around

Abergavenny has excellent transport links including a rail link between Newport and Hereford and beyond, and numerous fast bus services.

There are excellent road links and having a car is definitely an advantage.

If you're looking for something of a slower place, Abergavenny is on the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal. Narrow boats can be hired at nearby Goytre Wharf

Ah yes, this brings back great memories of my only trip to Wales! What a wonderful trip that was in a Mini 1000 in 1979. Too bad my photo colours have gone a bit weird - I would love to do a page on the place!
