Once you're visited - you can't leave!
Built in the late 13th Century by Roger Bigod to provide better protection for the town by using the river Wye as a natural barrier and integrating with the castle defences.
"In total the Port Wall was over 1,200 yards (1,100 metres) long, 6 feet (2 metres) thick and 15feet (4.6 metres) high. Originally at least a dozen towers about 27feet (8.2 metres) in diameter were built along the wall and around the outside there was a dry moat about 18 feet (5.5 metres) wide and 5feet (1.5.metres) deep." Chepstow Town Website.
Large parts of the wall are still intact, providing a sense of scale for what the original defences must have looked like.
Several particularly good vantage points are the main car park (off Welsh Street), from the A48 and the Railway Station area.
The Ancient 13th C. Entrance to Chepstow
Built by Roger Bigod in the 13th century, the gate was built as part of the fortifications that still circle the old part of the town.
Rebuilt during the mediaeval period in the early 16th Century, it was also used as a toll gate for the passage through Chepstow and across the River Wye.
Nowadays it makes for an attractive traffic bottleneckfor access into the old town.
Address: High St
Directions: At the intersection of the High St and Welsh St. MAP
