By world standards London is a very safe city to visit - you usually have to be doing something pretty stupid to run into any problems.
One stupid thing would be to accept a ride from an illegal minicab!
Usually you are figuring out how to get home after a night on the town and a dodgy looking car pulls up generally (but not always!) driven by a black or middle eastern man asking if you need a taxi - WALK AWAY, DO NOT GET INTO THE CAR!
There is a reason why these drivers have to tout for business: Their cars are usually death traps and unroadworthy, the drivers often don't know where they're going (because they haven't taken 'The Knowledge' like black cabbies) and drive dangerously, they are often illegal immigrants or criminals who have been known to rape women travelling alone or rob their passengers.
Why do people take them, as so many do (there are an estimated 1,000 illegal minicabs on London's streets!)?
It could be because Black Cabs are expensive or often too few and far between.
Also, minicab offices in London don't necessarily vet their drivers - so don't think that because they have an office they are going to be any better. Two of the minicab offices near where I live are total cowboys, but they are in the yellow pages!
A safe alternative are the Night Buses which run literally everywhere throughout the city. They are frequent, cheap and guaranteed to be full of people heading home after a great night out! If you are staying at any of the accommodation I will be highlighting, none of the night bus routes will be stopping further than a 100m away.
The man that was killed died because he had his head in through the passenger window arguing over not getting his change, the driver sped off and he fell, getting his head crushed under the car's rear wheels - thus also crushing potentially brilliant career.
Motto of the story, if you take a ride in one, agree the fare in advance and hand over exact money - you may think you're saving money, but is your life worth only a few coins?
