Highlights

Marloes Sands
One of my earliest memories is climbing the cliffs at Broad Haven, realising they were too difficult but looking down and realising going back down was even more difficult! I finally made it to the top but it was a very scary baptism into rock climbing and safety issues for a seven year old!

During the ages between about 7 and 10 I visited my great aunt in Haverfordwest in summer and got to know the Pembrokeshire Coast very well from Tenby to St Davids. It is a spectacular area of beautiful sandy beaches and an amazing array of rocky cliffs punctuated by hidden bays and windswept islands teeming with birdlife! The area is also dotted with formidable castles such as Manorbier and Pembroke, picturesque walled towns like Tenby and ancient religious centres such as the steeped in history walls of St David's Cathedral in the UK's smallest city of the same name...

Sadly my great aunt has passed away now, but I recently had the opportunity of spending a week in Pembrokeshire based at St David's for an Earth Sciences fieldtrip with Cardiff University - this allowed me to see the region in a different light as well as rekindle my love affair with this special place...

Quick Tips and Suggestions

Visit the spectacular scenery! Drink in the history of the place, from finding out that the blue stones of Stonehenge were originally quarried in the Preseli Hills, to the first sparks of Christianity in the British Isles, to magnificent castles, Napoleonic invasions, visiting island monasteries and beautiful walled towns...

There is plenty here for everyone of all ages!

Getting Around

Pembrokeshire is actually quite well served by rail, with termini in Pembroke Dock (via Tenby) for Irish Ferries to Rosslare, Milford Haven and Fishguard (via Haverfordwest) for Stena Ferries to Rosslare straight from London, Paddington.

There is also an excellent series of coastal bus services linked together under the Pembrokeshire Greenways Scheme, which also includes info on walking (including the 186 mile Pembrokeshire Coast National Trail) and cycling as well.

Naturally one of the best ways to get around this area is by car, however to do so would be adding to the congestion and pollution of the small country lanes in the area especially during summer. My suggest would be to leave the car at home, or at least on the outskirts of the park and explore in a more environmentally friendly and healthy way by public transport or even using your own steam walking or cycling!
