A short bus or train journey from Cardiff city centre takes you to the coast and this picturesque Victorian seaside resort, with its gift shops, restaurants and old-fashioned pier.
The town centre has several stylish cafes, galleries and delicatessens to keep you occupied, and there are a number of nice walks through landscaped gardens dating from the Victorian era, or along the cliff tops with plenty of benches along the way to enjoy the views and breathe in the sea air.
At the foot of Penarth hill, the marina offers a modern new face, with its waterfront homes, collection of yachts and at least one recommended restaurant. This part of town is also linked to Cardiff Bay by ferry and boasts access to the Cardiff Bay Barrage.
A little to the south of Penarth is Lavernock Point where Marconi succeeded in the first ever radio transmission over water to Flat Holm island in the Bristol Channel.
Penarth makes for a great day trip out from Cardiff offering plenty of things to do!
Check out the galleries and cafes of the main part of town.
Take a walk down to the Victorian pier and promenade along the Esplanade with a Thayer's Welsh Ice Cream in your hand.
Visit the Barrage or take a ferry across Cardiff Bay to Mermaid Quay.
Step back in time to visit Cosmeston Lakes and Mediaeval Village.
Visit a manor house and gardens at Dyffryn Gardens.
The best way to see Penarth and get around once you're here is by walking.
A Train from Cardiff Central Station takes 11 minutes to reach Penarth Station.
There are also several bus routes (nos in the 90's) from Cardiff as well.
You can also get a boat across the bay from Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay.
Taking a car here is easy too, however there is little point in using it around town but would be great to get to places like Lavernock Point, Cosmeston or Dyffryn Gardens.

A very nice little page on Penarth with very enticing tips and photos! You can paint a good picture yourself - with words!
Great pages, as usual (except when there's no commentary! Local joke). Two things, I'm coming over next October (you have been warned) and, what on earth is going on at West Ham??? Cheers.
