Packed and Ready!

The Difference Between Life and Death!

Luggage and bags: A decent sized backpack with a comfortable frame (check!)

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Multilayered clothing to wear as the weather dictates, however in the mountains always pack for the very worst snap change in weather (I had to borrow most of this from my friends). Decent hiking shoes properly broken in (check!). Make sure your outer layer is water/wind proof and/or you have fabrics such as wool that can keep you warm even if you get wet (borrowed most of this stuff too!)

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: The ubiquitous toilet roll and a small spade! Nope there's no dunnies in the mountains and you have to leave everything as you find it - which means you have to bury your own business! And no there are no wash basins and hand dryers to clean your hands afterwards!

Also a small 1st aid kit and a nurse and a doctor. Luckily two of our party were a nurse and a doctor. ;-)

Photo Equipment: Whatever you don't mind lugging miles and miles up and down rugged mountain country - I brought my trusty digital camera!

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Tents - preferably light ones! I was the poor sucker who had to carry the old and heavy one!

Good cooking equipment with plenty of gas and utensils etc.

A clay/ceramic water purifier. If you can handle drinking the slightly green looking water it is far easier than carrying huge amounts of water in with you. Each litre is about 1kg and we ended up each drinking several litres per day!

Miscellaneous: A) Decent ordnance survey type map instead of a drawing...;-)

B) A torch - preferably one per person which you actually bring with you!

On our trip the lack of 'A' led us to wish we'd brought 'B' with us from the campsite when our short day journey during daylight took longer than expected with the odd 'minor detour' and we were facing the very really possibility of being stranded on the mountain in the dark without our gear!

Oh, and a compass which we did have...
