Avoid driving at dusk or night time

Australian Wildlife with suicidal tendencies

Judging by the vast amount of roadkill on the sides of australia's roads, it seems that the local wildlife has acquired the lemming like tendency of throwing itself en masse in front of fast moving vehicles!

Basically you do not drive from dusk till dawn if you want to avoid the chances of seeing a 'Roo closer than you'd expected, as when darkness falls all the animals come from where they've been hiding from the sun and literally take to the road!

If you're hiring a car or van the jeopardy is even greater, as your insurance exceed may be compromised if you hit something and you could be left with a large bill because hitting a 'Roo WILL TOTAL your vehicle if it doesn't have 'Roo bars!!!

We saw some guys stuck at a service station and that is exactly what happened to them - infact the campervan company towed the vehicle away and left them to their own resources miles away from anywhere!

It is somewhat sad seeing the hundreds of kangaroo, emu, wombat, koala carcasses on the road - in fact the only wombat I saw in the wild was dead! :-(

On a brighter note, the once endangered Wedge-tailed Eagle is making a serious comeback in the outback as it adapts to a life of scavenging although that's not quite how it evolved to hunt its prey...
