Most people know of Ibiza from crazy stories or videos of foam parties on youtube. But it really is a truly beautiful place. A beautiful place that goes a little crazy every summer.
It's a schizophrenic place, really. The north side of the island is quiet and peaceful, with pine tree lined mountains and winding roads that reveal tiny, hidden beaches around almost every corner. While the south side is generally where all the action takes place. It goes deeper than that, though.
You have the west side (or, the sunset side), with wild and crazy San Antonio. A place where, on a given night, you can see drunk tourists wandering the early morning streets without a shirt, throwing up on walls. If you like sleep, try to stay away from this part of the island from mid-June until October. Even in the day time.
On the flipside of that coin, you have the east (or, the sunrise side). With the largest city on the island, Ibiza town (or Eivissa, in Catalan), and a small resort town just up the coast, Santa Eularia, where I lived until a few months ago. Ibiza town has a great nightlife, but it's much more reserved than San Antonio. The beach area of Playa den Bossa, where I will soon be residing, has everything you need, by way pf parties, and it's a few notches down on the crazy meter.
It's not only the island itself that has split personality, the people do as well. The main difference you might see in the people is this. You will either meet a tourist who is drawn to the isalnd for the wild and crazy things that happen when the sun goes down, or you will meet the opposite, someone who would rather not have the crazy ones on the island.
I'm a little of both. I first came here because Ibiza has the reputation of being the modern day Sodom and Gomorrah, but the island has a way of winning you over. I soon became very defensive of the island. For a while it was too much. Everytime I would see a can floating in the harbour, or an empty bag of chips lying on the side of the road I would get a look of disgust on my face.
I quickly learned that this is not the purpose for me being here, I learned to appreciate everything for what it is and I enjoy every day I have on this island and I enjoy it for what it is, beautiful.
And if you're wondering, that quote in the title is from the movie 'It's All Gone Pete Tong', where a fictional DJ is asked to describe Ibiza, and he says 'Ibiza is, dot, dot, dot'
