We stayed in resorts both times (Villa Cuba and Sol Sirenas) but we didn't sleep there. Within 5 minutes of talking to anyone, you are invited to their homes and offered food and a place to stay. Sure they want your money but not much of it. They make 8-12 US dollars a month so offer them 10 dollars and you have a place to stay the night. The further you get from Varadero, the more "casa particulars" there are, because technically they are illegal in the tourist areas, but that doesn't stop them.

Unique Qualities: They are very small houses, if you can call them that, but it's such an experience actually spending an extended amount of time with the Cuban people.

I stayed here earlier this year and will be back in September. The people were great, lots of younger guests, the pool is nice and big, the food was even passable, which is saying something in Cuba.

The location is great, any closer to the town and it would BE in the town. You walk across the street and you are in town, Havana Club is right across the street, La Comprasita is just a short walk.

Unique Qualities: The scooter rental guy in front of the hotel is the best in Varadero, he's very accomadating. We always rent from him, vene when we stay in other hotels.
