  • Marienplatz is dedicated to the patron of the city whose golden statue is on the top of a huge column (the Mariensaule) in the center of the square.
This square is the heart of the Altstadt.

Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall): the Neues Rathaus (New City Hall)

  • On the north side of Marienplatz is the Neues Rathaus (New City Hall) built in 19th-century Gothic style.
Each day at 10:30am, and also at noon and 5pm in the summer, the Glockenspiel on the facade stages an elaborate performance, including a miniature tournament, with enameled copper figures moving in and out of the archways.
Nice statues on the walls are a mix between a geko and a bat.
It's possible to climb the 55 steps to the top of its tower (an elevator is available) for a good overall view of the city center.

  • Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall), with its plain Gothic tower, is to the right of Marienplatz.
It was reconstructed in the 15th century, after being destroyed by fire.

  • The Dachau concentration camp is very closed to Munich, and you can easily reach it by public transportation.
If you have time, visit it: it's very instructive.

  • Between Marienplatz and Karlsplatz, there's the museum of fishes and sea.
Nice sculputeres outside invite you to enter and visit.
I had not enough time to visit it, but everyone say it's a nice experience, especially for kids.

Peterskirche: St. peter: the oldest church in Munich

  • Munich's oldest church (1180), known locally as Old Peter.
The white-and-gray interior has been decorated with gilded baroque accents and trompe l'oeil medallions.
It contains a series of murals by Johann Baptist Zimmermann, but nothing tops the attraction of the bizarre relic in the second chapel on the left: the gilt-covered and gem-studded skeleton of St. Mundita. From its resting place on a cushion, it stares at you with two false eyes in its skull. Jewels cover the mouth of its rotten teeth, quite a contrast to the fresh roses usually kept in front of the black-and-silver coffin. The church also has a tall steeple, which you can climb. Colored circles on the lower platform tell you whether the climb is worthwhile: If the circle is white, you can see as far as the Alps.

    Church free; tower 1.50€ adults, 1€ students, .30€ children. Mon-Sat 9am-7pm, Sun 10am-7pm. U-bahn/S-bahn: Marienplatz.

    Olympiapark & Olympiastadion: Strange art exhibition;

  • Olympiapark (tel. 089/30-67-24-14; U-bahn: Olympiazentrum), site of the 1972 Olympic Games, occupies 300 hectares (740 acres) at the city's northern edge. More than 15,000 workers from 18 countries transformed the site into a park of nearly 5,000 trees, 43km (27 miles) of roads, 32 bridges, and a lake. Olympiapark is a city in itself: It has its own railway station, U-bahn line, mayor, post office, churches, and elementary school. The planners even broke the city skyline by adding a 293m (960-ft.) television tower in the center of the park.
There are also many exhibitions: when I was in Munich everyone talked about the Korpenwelten one... you can understand from the pic that it was a strange exhibition between art and science....

  • I don't know why this metallic puppet is attached to this building wall, anyway, by me, this has always been one of the Munich's symbols!

Very nice work on both Munich and Dachau. You've done an excellent job of presenting a lot of information on both.
