    • When you enter in Dachau's camp, from the new entrance, the first thing you see is the long ditch, the life barbed-wire obstacle, the wall surronding the camp and the first guard tower.
    When a prisoner stepped on the 8 meters strip of grass in front of the ditch, the SS guards in the towers shot him without warning.
    Many prisoners used to step there in order to die with less pain.

    • There were 15 blocks (i.e.barracks to house the prisoners), two infirmary barracks, barracks where bio-chemical experiments were executed, a canteen and a workshop barrack.

    • Each block was dived in four 'stuben' i.e. a kind of living-room and a dormitory unit.

    One 'stube' was to accomodate 52 prisoners i.e. 208 per barracks.

    • Upon the violent expansion of the third reich thousands of prisoners from all Europe arrived in Dachau's camp. The camp became overcrowded that up to 1600 prisoners had to live in the same barrack.

    • The main central building, where now there's the camp's museum, contained the kitchen, the laundry, storage for prisoners clothing and personal belongings and some of the tortures rooms.

    • The 'jourhaus' was the only entransìce to the camp (nowadays you'll enter from the opposite side from the main street).
    'Arbeit macht frei' was the slogan the prisoners saw on the gate as they came in (see intro).
    On the other side there were the SS guard rooms.

    • Behind the central building, there was the 'lagerarrest' or bunker (the camp prison).
    Flogging, punishment at the stake and executions were carried out in the yard of this bunker.

    Here there was a portable altar.

     Ho visitato Dachau l'estate scorsa. C'erano molti studenti chiassosi a cui non interessava niente dei morti. E' un posto che fa riflettere. Andando con la S-Bahn, il bus per il KZ era gratis. Se vuoi, puoi guardare la mia pagina.
