I promise I will have a picture of Ocotillo someday.
Ocotillo, not to be confused with Ocotillo Wells to the north, is a small town that straddles I-8 just at the base of the mountains to the west. It's main road, S-2 heads into the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park to its north as well as the Yuha Desert area which is controlled by the BLM.
I don't know what to say about Ocotillo except that I usually just pass through it to get to the south end of the park. I have visited two facilities for food and supplies and was not impressed by the people working there and haven't visited these places since, even though one is under new ownership.
A little history: this area was entirely wiped out by Hurricane (by then a tropical storm) Kathleen in 1978. You can see evidence of it in various places around the area. There are also historical photos available that show how the area was practically turned into a shallow lake.
