One thing that made me enjoy Budapest without being annoyed by traffic is the fact that most main (busy) streets seem to be equipped with an underground crossing. The crossings are not really posh but do feel safe, and in any case they make the city more manageable for pedestrians – an idea I would like to propagate in any big city!

Taxi's

By now you probably have read warnings about how taxi companies tend to rip you off. But if you really can’t help yourself and just HAVE to get a cab, try the company “Fö Taxi”.

You can call for one by dialling 222 22 22 when in Budapest (7 x 2). “Fö” charges 300 ft (HUF) to start and then 150 ft (HUF) per kilometre. Which is – as I was told – cheap in Budapest.

If you don’t speak Hungarian (who does? :), ask a local to call them, as the person at the switchboard does not always know what you are talking about in the non-native speak.

If you don’t mind paying way too much, do yourself a favour and do not get in a taxi without a taxi label on the door and a special yellow licence plate. If you do and get in trouble, you are literally on your own.
