Café Anglais: A wonderful place to linger...

  • Nightlife Spot: Café Anglais

Now this is an absolute must (and always pretty crowded, so I might just as well tell you about it). You can find Café Anglais right at the town square, and you will find not just a café. Excellent food and very nice service on the first floor, and all this laced with a sense of culture and art, served with a nonchalant flair that seems to do well among the expatriates in town.

Try the cakes. Try the sandwiches. Try the coffee. Try the cakes again. Sigh...

Slightly less cheap (but only slightly).

Beerhouse: House + beer = beerhouse (duh!)

Probably not the most typical or cosy place, but one you should have a look at when you're in town a bit longer. The place is connected to a brewery (always a feature for a visiting Belgian), but there's also a sauna upstairs and probably a lot more things I didn't discover yet.

The place is pretty big, so you can sit in the back for some anonymity, or enjoy a seat at the window for some people-watching. The terrace outside in summer seems particularly attractive for weekend tripping Brits wanting to try just how much they can drink in one session, so take care when passing. The place also offers food and something they call pizza. Good if the beer gets to you and you have forgotten to "lay a foundation".

Oh, and this place also sells beer to take away...

    McCools: The name doesn't lie!

  • Nightlife Spot: McCools

You can find the bar on the first floor of the house on the corner of Suur-Karja and Pärnu mnt. It is a very open and bright place (as opposed to dark, narrow and smoky), yet quite cosy. Nice features are the very big central bar and the giant TV screen on which videoclips are projected. This place is very new, but it's bound to become a popular weekend hangout.

McCools offers your normal range of drinks as well as food and cocktails. Prices are normal for Tallinn. I read somewhere that on Friday and Saturday nights prices of some drinks fluctuate according to demand, but I can't confirm this from experience. Should be fun though :-)

    Club Havana: Azucar!

Tired of the medieval surroundings? Looking for some Latin fever? This would be a good place to start.

Club Havana is not only a nice bar, but also a place with a dancefloor AND people dancing. Check out the salsa-action!

Kower Korts: Look who's (not) drinking...

A place with a bit of a dodgy look, but fine for a watering hole. Probably your best bet if you are looking for a particular brand of whiskey or the likes - the collection of liquors is comparatively impressive.

I was attracted to the place by the stuffed animal in the window (a winged wolf, I believe it was) and the 'mad hatter' outside. I guess that puppet got a bit frozen and stopped drinking long ago - if you had enough to drink you might see him move after all! Along with the wolf and the rest of the world.
