Ever played knights & castles when you were a kid?

This is the place you would have loved to be...

The walls surrounding the old city
Carcassonne. It really is an astonishing place to visit!

Located in the south of France, carcassonne mixes the medieval and the new in one single city. East of the river is the new city, which is a lovely place to stroll around (visit the market!); to the west is the old medieval city - one to the likes of which you probably will never see anywhere else in your life...
pont vieux & pont neuf
The main attraction is the old medieval city, and it is pretty much the only attraction worth travelling to, but you will certainly not be bored by it.

When we were there (for a weekend trip in February), it had snowed and there was ice covering the streets and city walls - the locals assured us this was very exceptional though. They also tell us the summer season brings flocks of tourists to the city, so plan your visit carefully!

And since you are in the south of France, enjoy the local food and - above all - the local wine! THE stuff to drink over there is Minervois, a typically fruity and playfull red wine. There are plenty of cafés and restaurants, including very charming little (literally!) ones in the middle of the medieval city.

The best way to get informed about Carcassonne is to go and have a look at the official website - it offers all kinds of very detailed information and allows you to find a hotel (including price information and contact details). Check it out!
