one of the best bits of advice that i can give to anyone going to rome is to allow yourself to get lost and just wander around, without a particular direction, and see what you find. as there are so many attractions, you often come across very nice places that no map has listed.
rome is another of those cities that have been described by so many in so many ways- why crap on about the obvious.
yes, it is nice; yes, it is one of the historically most significant in the world; yes, the pope guy lives here;
yes, you do get sick of churches after a day here (unless youre on of those religious types for whom it may hold a little more significance); yes, the romans are in fact quite crazy; yes, the espresso here is brilliant; yes, i will shut up now.

...when you lead as hectic a life as the romans, you can ill afford to waste any time on the phone or on the loo- so you combine the two...
