"First Annual Wildflower Celebration" Mount Cuba by Rhondaj

The Mt. Cuba Center opened its doors for the first time hosting a Wildflower Celebration. Hours were from 11am-4pm. Free admission. We got there shortly after 11 am; already the traffic was jammed and we were parking in the overflow parking lots. The turnout was unbelievable. Instead of 100s of visitors, it was more like a thousand. The guides kept their cool, but you could tell they were overwhelmed. The hourly tour through the estate turned into a wander-as-you-will walk. Wonder how they will change things for next year?

This is the former estate of Mr. and Mrs. Lammot du Pont Copeland. When she died a few years ago, the Mrs. left this place as a non-profit organization committed to promoting an appreciation for plants native to the piedmont. The estate is rather modest, considering it sits on 630 acres. The estate (built 1935-1937) is used as a conference/education center.

Visiting is by appointment only, unless special events are held, such as today's Wildflower celebration.
