A Day Trip to Locarno

by Rhondaj - last update: Oct 2, 2004

From Kandersteg to Locarno

weather: sunny and hot --33 C

To see a different side of Switzerland, we head down to Locarno. At the start of our journey we didn't realize how long it would take--otherwise we probably would have done an overnighter.

So off for the first time going in the opposite direction from Kandersteg, through the Loetschberg tunnel heading towards Brig. In Brig we change trains for Domodosola. At Domodosola we aren't quick (savy) enough to get the connecting train, so we have to wait an hour for the next. RATS! Well, we stroll through the town. So that was okay.

Finally long train ride to Locarno. Scenery was gorgeous though! And once the train had to stop (suddenly!) for a herd of goats crossing the tracks. It winds up taking us 4+ hours to get to Locarno!
But it is a beautiful city and so different from our usual alpine days.
We stroll the lakeside, eat yummy pizza, take a little site-seeing ride, and heaven help us, Bob finds another fleamarket! After strolling the old town, we get gelato and start the long, long journey home.

4 languages are spoken in Switzerland. In Ticino it is Italien. All 4 languages are of equal official usuage. All produce is in fact declared in 3 of them. It has nothing to do with choice, just historical and geograghical fact.
