Young sailors on Thunersee
Kandersteg is about a half-hour train ride to Spiez. Nearly every day we found ourselves riding the rails to Spiez to make a rail connection, on our way to another day's adventures.

Due to a bad luck of train timing, on our return trips back through in the evenings, we found ourselves with an hour long wait for our Kandersteg train. Jenna and I usually went off in new directions each time to explore this charming town. Bob became a regular in the train station cafe. (bar section)

On one of our explorations we scooped out the local pool/lake area and wound up making plans to spend a much needed lazy day there.

Spiez was also our starting point for riding the ships that chugged from town to town along the lake's edge. We enjoyed these rides so much that we wound up using these ships three times during our vacation.
The train station sits above the town of Spiez. To the left of the train station is a small, square information building. Stop here first to pick up information about Spiez. For instance, the ships' schedule is available here. Helpful workers can also give suggestions according to how much time you plan to spend in town and what is open at the time of your visit.

Pros:"lake, rolling mountains, charming, good take off point for rail riding"
Cons:"maybe too large for some, too small for others"
In A Nutshell:"After Kandersteg, My Second Choice as a Home Base Place"

After your eyes get used to the dark, the flash will blind everyone and that's very dangerous ...imagine your one and only guide being blinded...yikes!
