Internet Point and other Venice, Italy Local Custom Tips

When we were in Rome, internet cafes were everywhere and most included a cafe bar for coffee and drinks. In Venice, I noticed they were called Internet Points, and were strictly for using the 'net. Shops were very small, so it would be easy to miss 'em if you don't watch for them. Costs were cheap, only a few euros for an hour.

Venetians set their trash out daily except for Sundays. Our landlady warned us not to set it out until morning or the animals get into it. Well, we didn't, but just about everyone else did, including the restaurants (with lots of garbage). We were awoken every morning by the squabling, squawking seagulls fighting over the best bits.

The trash boats are green (I have a picture somewhere-I'll hunt it up). Men run up and down the narrow streets with carts collecting the trash, when full, they wheel it back to the boat. The boat picks it up with this big claw and dumps it into a big dumpster on board the boat.

Then off go the guys again with the cart. The trash boat slowly moves down the canal to the next street.

Yes, this entertainment is free in your local neighborhood...

Our apartment was near a university. At this time of year (July) many students were graduating, having earned a doctorate degree. It was common to see a graduate wearing a ring of flowers being paraded around the Margherita campo and through the streets, escorted by family and friends. Every so often they'd stop and sing and all were very festive. One of the songs they sing is something like this: Doc-tor-ae, Doc-tor-ae, you think you're really something, but your just a horse's @ss.

You can't see it here, I missed the picture opportunity, but this girl was made to carry around a huge paper mache' ***! (this appendage also appeared a lot on the posters) Posters were made by friends and hung up near the university. The posters were charactertures of the graduate. Too bad I can't read Italian-they were probably very funny.
