Getting TO/AROUND: There are two ways to get around in Venice- walking or by boat. To get an overall view of Venice, it is nice to get on the #1 vaporetto. It is generally too slow for getting from two far points, because it stops at every possible point between Piazzale Roma and Piazza San Marco. Usually seating is very crowded for this boat! If you get on at Piazzle Roma, you have a better chance of getting a seat.

Number #82 runs the length of the canal too, but doesn't stop everywhere, so sometimes it's the better boat to board, depending on where you're going.

Getting TO/AROUND: The vaporetto stops will have two platform buildings. The trick is: If you want to travel to the left, board on the right platform, if you want to travel right, get on the left platform. Or think of it this way, if it is easier for you: The approaching boat will stop at the closest platform to itself.

Also, make sure you go into the entrance, not the exit. Busy stations will have a chain across the entrance to make sure you don't push on before everyone has had a chance to disembark. Locals will go into the exit and just as the last person gets off, get onto the boat before all the tourists are let through the chained entrance. I guess it is their right for putting up with us...

As the boat zig-zags its way down the canal, either side entrance will be used, so make sure you don't position yourself in the way. Leave the sliding gates clear, but don't worry, if you don't, you'll soon find out...

Getting TO/AROUND: So getting around Venice can be by foot, but there are only three bridges across the canal.

You can also take a vaporetto boat which zig-zags its way down the canal.

Or if you just want to go directly across, there are several traghetto points. Do you know how the street names are painted on the buildings? So are the traghetto station signs. (Because Finding the traghetto stop can be just as tricky as standing up in it as you cross) You are allowed to sit, after all you are only a tourist...

If you have a vaporetto pass, so what? You can't use it on a traghetto. The guide books say it's 40 cents per crossing, but I thought it was 50 cents. (maybe I just got ripped off...)

    Stations:
    1. Fondamente S. Lucia (in front of the railroad station) - Fondamenta San Simeón Piccolo
    2. San Marcuola - Fóndaco dei Turchi (by the Natural History Museum)
    3. Santa Sofia (near Ca' D'Oro) - Pescaria (fish market)
    4. Riva del Carbòn - Fondamente del Vin
    5. Sant' Angelo - San Tomà
    6. San Samuele - Ca' Rezzónico
    7. Campo del Traghetto - Calle Lanza (near the Salute Church)

Your Venice page is very nice. You managed to grab the World Cup atmosphere and that seems to be a great fun. Thanks for sharing. With all the best wishes, I&V
