Visiting Venice

by Rhondaj - last update: Dec 30, 2006

World Cup Mania

Eyes glued to the Telly
We were in Rome for the play-offs, and Venice for the World Cup final game. The Romans were definitely crazier. The Venetians were enthusiastic, but a little more restrained. There were some France fans around this week and even a few at the campo to watch the game. They were tolerated quite well. Then again, Italy did win!

Campo S. Margherita was the place to be. All the cafes spent the day setting their televisions up outside and arranging tables and chairs. Seats had to be claimed by 7:30 or you weren't sitting down.

When the game was over, one had to watch out, because firecrackers were just being thrown randomly around the square. Lots of singing, flag waving, and jumping into the canals!
Hoping to win...

France Supporters

The day before the World Cup 2006 this young group of boys were running around St. Mark's Square in support of their country. I was impressed with the Italians good tolerance. No heckling at all.
We're not begging, we're artists

Unsuccessful street performance

A group of ghouls made their way through St. Mark's in gyrating slow motion. When they got to the back of the square they were met by the police who were not amused. This guy broke character to explain that they weren't soliciting for money, they were just performing for art's sake. (This is my I-don't-know-Italian-but-guessing interpretation.) The cops weren't convinced and sent them away. My favorite ghoul is the one who never broke character while the rest tried to reason with the law.

Your Venice page is very nice. You managed to grab the World Cup atmosphere and that seems to be a great fun. Thanks for sharing. With all the best wishes, I&V
