Aegina Island: Jewel of the Saronic Gulf

by Confucius - last update: Jul 15, 2006

You'll go nuts over this easy day trip from Athens

View southeast from the Aphaia Temple parking lot
Have you ever seen a map of Tasmania? That's what Aegina Island looks like from a bird's eye view. My Easter Sunday tour of Aegina touched all three corners as I covered a few popular destinations and ventured off the beaten path. The scenic island is famous for its pistachio orchards and the Temple of Aphaia as well as being the inspiration for Nikos Kazantzakis, who wrote the novel "Zorba the Greek" while residing in the village of Livadi north of Aegina town.
Springtime means you'll get flowers in your photos

The Temple of Aphaia

The star attraction on Aegina Island is this temple which was built back in 490 B.C. If you have already seen the Parthenon at Athens and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion then you need to come here to complete the Athena goddess trifecta, which is also shaped like a triangle!
Greece's largest church Aegina's Aghios Nektarios

Greece's largest church is on this small island!

How did Greece's largest church end up on this small island? The answer is inside ... (see "things to do" tip) ... and features a special guest appearance by actor Anthony Quinn performing as Zorba The Greek.

Pros:"You will get many free samples of pistachios in town near Aegina port"
Cons:"Restaurant food is very expensive; pack a lunch from Piraeus"
In A Nutshell:"In a pistachio nutshell: this is simply one of the best day trips from Athens"
