Hold it, I need to change my camera batteries! | The changing of the guard and batteries in Athens |
The Greek people are so accomodating to tourists. These patient Evzones held this pose while I quickly changed camera batteries.
I took so many photos in Athens, but didn't get any pictures of the evening Easter ceremony I attended because I assumed cameras would not be allowed inside the church. So unfortunately I am the only tourist without any photos of the Orthodox bishop who looked like Santa Claus wearing a jeweled crown.
I can't say enough about the hospitality of local people in Greece. A visit to Athens is enhanced by the smiles you get from helpful folks who don't mind that you just said "squid" in Greek instead of "good morning" (Kalamari! Oops, sorry,... Kalimera!) |
| A large bronze statue of Harry Truman is in Athens |
| | Isn't this a famous man from modern Greek history? It's so nice for Americans to tour a European country's capital and see a statue of one of our presidents.
"America needs you! Could you please come home?" |
| Hadrian's Arch viewed from the southeast |
| | Welcome to "The City of Hadrian" This arch was constructed in honor of Roman emperor Hadrian in 131, the same year that the nearby Temple of Olympian Zeus was completed. He had recently finished touring Jordan, where another Hadrian's Arch was built in Jerash.
This elaborate arch marked the border between the oldest part of Athens and the new construction which occured during the Roman period. The famous inscription facing the Acropolis side of the arch reads "This is Athens, the ancient city of Theseus". Yet on the other side of the arch, facing the Temple of Olympian Zeus, it states "THIS IS THE CITY OF HADRIAN, NOT OF THESEUS". |
