When is the best time to visit Patmos?

Your Greece vacation plan probably does not begin with this island. Most tourists arrive by cruise ship instead of independent excursions. However there are a couple festivals worth noting if you really want to experience the best of what Patmos has to offer, and just happen to arrive the day before. (Good luck finding a hotel room!)

Easter on Patmos: If you are in Greece during the Greek Orthodox Easter then you know that there are celebrations going on all over the country. On Patmos you can see the unique re-enactment of the Last Supper on Good Thursday. On Easter Sunday is a multi-lingual mass and on the Tuesday after Easter there is a fancy parade of Byzantine icons.

August 14-15: This elaborate festival celebrates the day that Virgin Mary died. If you are doing the cruise ship route of this area then you probably already saw the Virgin Mary's residence, where she spent her final days, near Ephesus. On August 14th is the solemn procession of her epitaph and the next day is a big feast with music and dancing.

During the month of September is the annual Greek Festival of Religious Music on Patmos. You can call this local number for the exact dates: 2247032977 (Patmos Promotion Bureau)

Holy Cave of the Apocalypse

This is the main attraction on Patmos. See where Saint John the Evangelist rested his head and where he wrote the Bible's last chapter.

Patmos is a popular cruise ship stop

The view from the path leading up to the Monastery is spectacular. You can see the northern part of Patmos as well as your cruise ship waiting at the port.
