Here it is! The famous Hong Kong dim sum T-shirt!
Ladies Market is the place that has the T-shirts you've been trying to find everywhere else in Hong Kong (except the expensive airport gift shop) but you still need to ask around.
Take, for example, the famous dim sum T-shirt. I had to walk a couple blocks up Tung Choi Street asking sidewalk T-shirt vendors "You got dim sum?"
They look at me like I'm crazy, usually speechless, so I have to clarify what I'm talking about. "I want that T-shirt with all the dim sum on it and Chinese characters; ha gao, cha siu bao, nuo mai gai...you know what I'm sayin' ?" (They seldom do.)
When you do find somebody who knows what T-shirt you have in mind they will likely tell you that it's sold out or they don't make that one any more.
LIES! They are only trying to trick you into buying an alternative T-shirt . Keep walking. That's the beauty of Ladies Market. They are all selling the same stuff and the T-shirts come from a single factory in Shenzhen.
Just keep going north on Tung Choi until you almost reach Argyle Street and that's where you'll finally find the famous Hong Kong dim sum T-shirt.
What to buy: The Hong Kong dim sum T-shirt features small photos of the dim sum shown in round bamboo containers next to the name which is written in Chinese. It's an attractive souvenir that makes an excellent 5 star gift for yourself and friends back home.
This is one of those souvenir T-shirts that you also should actually wear while you're touring Hong Kong. After you buy some, put one on and take advantage of the afternoon discount after 14:30 to get the real thing at an even cheaper price.
Many Kowloon restaurants serving dim sum no longer use the traditional push-carts that allow customers to look at the various food items as they go around the tables. Therefore it is very useful to wear this shirt and simply point at yourself to tell the restaurant staff what you want instead of trying to order from the poorly written English translation menu.
What to pay: Don't pay more than Hong Kong $45 for the Hong Kong dim sum T-shirt at Ladies Market. I got a special 3 for 100 price because I spoke some Cantonese and attracted a crowd of curious onlookers. I forget the exact price at the airport's duty free gift shop but it was something ridiculous like HK $125 for the exact same shirt design.
