Mauritius is situated in the Indian Ocean, approximately 2400 kilometres off the South East Coast of Africa. The island, which is of volcanic origin, covers an area of 1,865 square kilometres or 720 square miles. Port Louis is the capital city. English is the official language. French is understood most over the island. Creole is spoken throughout the island. The Mauritian unit of currency is the rupee. Mauritius is the perfect year-round tropical beach destination. With palm-fringed beaches, clear blue waters, dramatic mountains, lush vegetation and renowned hotels, Mauritius is ideal for a honeymoon or for escaping from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The island is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs and has some of the world's best game fishing and diving.
I have been priviledged to visit Mauritius on 3 occasions over the last 20 years. (I was 13 on my 1st visit) We have always stayed at the same hotel, because it is quite simply incomparable. Sun Internationals, Le Touessrok Sun. It was a 4* hotel when we first went but is now a 5* deluxe. (Actually out of our pocket range now) It is one of the leading hotels of the world. Has to be seen to be beleived, and it is surely one of the most romantic hotels on earth.
My last trip was in March 1998, I was 5 months pregnant - a mistake really because I was so hot, I couldn't stand it! The average temperature during day time is 25° C (75° F) and rarely under 13° C (62° F) at night. There are two seasons. Hot from November to April. Warm from May to October. The only snag is that the warm season can be disturbed by the passage of cyclones. However, the chances of your meeting with really cyclonic weather during a trip to Mauritius are slim but, believe me, such an experience is one to be remembered! It was our family's second trip to the island, in 1985, a 10 day trip. Started well enough, but after 4 days we were hit by a ferocious cyclone! We were not able to leave the hotel at all, and when we eventually flew home it was quite frankly, utterly terrifyng. However I was 16 years old and still relatively convinced of my immortality so it didn't bug me much. The coke all over my clothes annoyed me more than the roller coaster flight. (Not to mention that I had also suffered a 3rd degree burn from the sun in the first few days of sunshine.) Tropical cyclones pass near enough to Mauritius to give on the average, only about four days per year of the windy and rainy weather which is much more frequent in temperate latitudes.
Our trip in 1998 was meant to be our last trip alone together before the baby arrived. |
